What Is the Army Fitness Test (AFT)?
The Army's current physical fitness test of record: its five events, scoring, and pass standards.
The Army Fitness Test (AFT) became the official physical fitness test of record on June 1, 2025, replacing the Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT), per Army Directive 2025-06. The Army designed the AFT around five events that mirror the physical demands of combat — lifting, pushing, sprinting, dragging, bracing, and running — and every Soldier completes all five events in a single session.
Each event is scored out of 100 points for a maximum AFT score of 500, using the official Army Fitness Test Score Tables across ten age groups (17-21 through Over 62) and M/C and F categories. Combat specialties must score 350 points with a 60-point minimum per event; all other Soldiers pass at 300 with the same 60-point floor. For Regular Army combat specialties, the annual testing cycle includes one record AFT plus one record CFT; other Reserve Component combat specialties alternate the AFT and CFT in separate years. Use the free army fitness test calculator to convert your results into a pass or fail score. Review the AFT scoring standards or calculate your AFT score directly.
- Max Deadlift (MDL): a three-repetition deadlift from 120 to 420 pounds that replicates lifting ammunition boxes, a wounded Soldier, or heavy equipment.
- Hand-Release Push-Up (HRP): as many correct repetitions as possible in two minutes, lifting your hands off the ground at the bottom of every repetition.
- Sprint-Drag-Carry (SDC): five sprints up and down a 25-meter lane, sprinting, dragging a 90-pound sled, and carrying two 40-pound kettlebells.
- Plank (PLK): hold a proper plank position for as long as possible.
- Two-Mile Run (2MR): a timed run that builds the cardiovascular endurance combat demands.

What Is the Combat Field Test (CFT)?
The Army's new pass/fail seven-event assessment for combat specialties.
The Combat Field Test (CFT) is the Army's new pass/fail assessment for combat specialties, announced under the 2026 Combat Field Test directive. Soldiers complete all seven events in one continuous session. The entire sequence must be completed in 30 minutes or less; if a Soldier is unable to complete any individual event, the test is terminated and recorded as a failure.
Combat specialists in the Regular Army take one record CFT plus one record AFT each year, with at least four months between tests; Reserve combat specialists alternate the CFT and AFT in separate years. A failed CFT requires a retest within 90 days (180 days for Reserve Soldiers). The seven events are completed continuously, with the full sequence required to be completed within 30 minutes. Track the rollout on the Combat Field Test policy updates.
- 1-mile run — a timed opening mile.
- 30 dead-stop push-ups.
- 100-meter sprint.
- 16 sandbag lifts — a 40-pound sandbag raised onto a 65-inch platform 16 times.
- Water-can carry — two 5-gallon water cans, 40 pounds each, carried 50 meters.
- Movement drill — a 25-meter high crawl followed by a 25-meter rush.
- Second 1-mile run.

What is the Army Fitness Test (AFT)?
The AFT is the Army's official test of record since June 1, 2025, replacing the ACFT. It has five events scored out of 500 (100 points per event), with Combat 350 / General 300 pass scores and a 60-point minimum per event.
What changed in the 2026 Combat Field Test (CFT)?
The CFT is a pass/fail assessment of seven events performed continuously for combat specialties: a one-mile run, 30 dead-stop push-ups, a 100-meter sprint, 16 sandbag lifts, a water-can carry, a movement drill, and a second one-mile run. Soldiers must complete all seven events in 30 minutes or less; failure to complete any event terminates the test and records a failure. The CFT does not replace the AFT.
What is the new waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) standard?
The Army replaced height-and-weight tables with the waist-to-height ratio in 2026. Soldiers must keep their waist divided by their height under 0.55, measured at the navel twice per year. Use the free WHtR calculator to check your ratio against the standard.
