AFT Alternate Events: Standards for Profile Soldiers (2026)

Soldiers on a permanent profile may substitute one of four alternate aerobic events for the two-mile run on the AFT: the 2.5-mile walk, 12,000-meter stationary bike, 5,000-meter row, or 1,000-meter swim. This page covers the official time standards, GO/NOGO scoring, combat MOS profile scoring, and the rules for using alternate events. Every fact is sourced from ATP 7-22.01, Army Directive 2025-06, and AR 350-1.

Alternate Events at a Glance

Four alternate aerobic events are available for Soldiers authorized by their physical profile:

2.5-Mile Walk — timed walk, GO/NOGO scoring by age and gender

12,000-Meter Stationary Bike — fixed distance, GO/NOGO scoring by age and gender

5,000-Meter Row — fixed distance, GO/NOGO scoring by age and gender

1,000-Meter Swim — fixed distance, GO/NOGO scoring by age and gender

Alternate events replace only the two-mile run. Soldiers must still complete the other four AFT events.

Who Can Use an Alternate Event?

Alternate aerobic events are available to Soldiers with a Permanent Profile documented on DA Form 3349 that authorizes an alternate event for the two-mile run. The profile must be approved by the Soldier's medical provider and commander. Soldiers generally do not take an alternate event on a temporary profile, although AR 350-1 allows Soldiers with temporary profiles lasting more than six months to take an alternate test when approved by the commander.

To use an alternate event, a Soldier must have a profile specifically authorizing an alternate aerobic event for the two-mile run. Soldiers cannot self-select an alternate event; the medical provider and commander must approve the substitute. The alternate event is only available for the aerobic portion of the AFT — there are no alternate events for the deadlift, hand-release push-up, sprint-drag-carry, or plank. Profile-based test administration is explained on the test day and retest page.

How the Profile Works: DA Form 3349

DA Form 3349 (Physical Profile) is the official document used to record a Soldier's physical profile, including the authorization to use alternate aerobic events. The form must be completed by a medical provider and approved by the Soldier's commander. The profile specifies which events the Soldier can and cannot perform, and whether an alternate event is authorized for the aerobic portion.

The DA Form 3349 must be updated whenever the Soldier's medical status changes. Soldiers authorized an alternate aerobic event must present the form to their unit before the AFT. The profile remains in effect until it is updated or superseded by the medical provider. Soldiers cannot use an alternate event without a valid DA Form 3349 on file. What happens on test day with your profile is covered on the the retest guide.

Alternate Event 1: 2.5-Mile Walk

The 2.5-mile walk is a timed event where the Soldier walks a 2.5-mile course as quickly as possible. The event is scored on a GO/NOGO basis — the Soldier must complete the walk within the time standard for their age and gender group to receive a passing result.

Walking is the most common alternate aerobic event because it requires no special equipment and can be conducted on any flat course. The time standard varies by age and gender and is published in the official AFT scoring tables in ATP 7-22.01.

Alternate Event 2: 12,000-Meter Stationary Bike

The stationary bike is a fixed-distance event conducted on an exercise bike. The Soldier pedals 12,000 meters as quickly as possible, and the event is scored on a GO/NOGO basis. The time standard varies by age and gender, and the Soldier must complete the distance within the time limit to pass.

The stationary bike is a common alternate aerobic event because it provides a low-impact cardio option. The stationary cycle must meet the equipment and measurement requirements in ATP 7-22.01, including accurate distance measurement and required adjustability. The Army does not endorse a particular brand of stationary bike.

Alternate Event 3: 5,000-Meter Row

The row is a fixed-distance event conducted on a rowing machine. The Soldier rows 5,000 meters as quickly as possible, and the event is scored on a GO/NOGO basis. The time standard varies by age and gender, and the Soldier must complete the distance within the time limit to pass.

The row is a non-impact aerobic alternative that may be authorized when the Soldier's profile permits it. The rowing machine must meet the equipment and measurement requirements in ATP 7-22.01, including accurate distance measurement and required adjustability. The Army does not endorse a particular brand of rowing machine.

Alternate Event 4: 1,000-Meter Swim

The swim is a fixed-distance event conducted in a pool. The Soldier swims 1,000 meters as quickly as possible, and the event is scored on a GO/NOGO basis. The time standard varies by age and gender, and the Soldier must complete the distance within the time limit to pass.

The swim is a non-impact aerobic alternative that may be authorized under the Soldier's profile. Pool requirements and the authorized swim stroke are specified in ATP 7-22.01.

How Alternate Events Are Scored (GO/NOGO)

Alternate aerobic events are scored on a GO/NOGO basis rather than the normal 0-100 AFT event scale. If the Soldier completes the event within the time standard, they receive a GO (pass). If they fail to complete the event within the time standard, they receive a NO-GO (fail). The time standard varies by age and gender and is published in ATP 7-22.01.

Alternate aerobic events are scored GO/NOGO rather than on the normal 0-100 AFT event scale. For semi-centralized promotion purposes, current Army policy provides specific point treatment for Soldiers in combat specialties who receive a GO on the alternate aerobic event or have events prohibited by a permanent profile, as specified in Army Directive 2025-06. Standard-event scoring for reference is on the AFT standards page.

Combat MOS Profile Scoring: 70-Point Average

Soldiers serving in combat specialties who use a permanent profile must average at least 70 points across the AFT events they are able to perform, and receive a GO on the alternate aerobic event when required. The minimum total therefore scales with the number of events scored:

Combat MOS Profile Scoring: 70-Point Average
Events scoredMinimum averageMinimum total
470280
370210
270140
17070

The alternate aerobic event itself remains GO/NOGO rather than a normal 0-100 event score.

AFT Alternate Events: FAQ

Direct answers to questions about alternate events for profile soldiers.

What are the AFT alternate events?

Four aerobic alternatives for the two-mile run: the 2.5-mile walk, 12,000-meter stationary bike, 5,000-meter row, and 1,000-meter swim. Available for Soldiers authorized by their physical profile.

Can I use an alternate event for the AFT?

Yes, if your profile on DA Form 3349 authorizes an alternate aerobic event, approved by your medical provider and commander.

How is an alternate event scored?

GO/NOGO only — no normal 0-100 event score. Complete the event within the time standard to pass.

Do alternate events affect promotion points?

For most Soldiers, no — alternate events produce a GO/NOGO result, not an AFT score. However, for semi-centralized promotion purposes, Soldiers in combat specialties receive 70 points for a GO on the alternate event and for events prohibited by a permanent profile.

Can I substitute more than one AFT event?

No. Alternate events are only available for the aerobic portion (two-mile run). All other AFT events must be completed as prescribed.

Who approves the use of an alternate event?

Your medical provider and commander must approve the alternate event use, documented on DA Form 3349.

What is the time standard for the 2.5-mile walk?

The time standard varies by age and gender and is published in the official AFT scoring tables. See the alternate event standards table on this page for your group.

Can a Soldier with a Temporary Profile use an alternate event?

Usually not. However, AR 350-1 allows Soldiers with temporary profiles lasting more than six months to take an alternate test when approved by the commander.
