Army promotion points sequence eligible Soldiers on the Promotion Recommended Roster (PRR) within their MOS. The Army publishes monthly cutoff scores, and Soldiers compete against the cutoff applicable to their MOS.

How Army Promotion Points Work

Army promotion points are automatically calculated from your personnel records by the Army's HR system of record and are tied to a monthly promotion cycle. Soldiers compete for promotion within their MOS on the Promotion Recommended Roster (PRR), sequenced by promotion points. The Army publishes monthly cutoff scores — the minimum points needed for selection in each MOS. Meeting the published MOS cutoff is required for selection, subject to the Army's applicable promotion eligibility and selection rules.

The key insight for Soldiers is that promotion points are a monthly snapshot of your records, not a one-time exam. Your AFT score, weapon qualification, completed courses, college credits, and awards all appear on your Promotion Point Worksheet (PPW) in IPPS-A. Because the cutoff score changes each month based on the number of Soldiers competing and the number of positions available, a score that earned promotion last month may not be enough this month. The goal is to maximize your points across all four categories so that your total exceeds the cutoff when your MOS comes up on the monthly list. Military Training Points (Max 280 SGT / 230 SSG)

Military training points come from two sources. Weapons qualification is worth up to 160 points for SGT and 110 for SSG, based on your most recent qualification with your primary weapon (Expert, Sharpshooter, or Marksman). The AFT is worth up to 120 points for both ranks. An AFT score of 500 earns the full 120; a score of 300-304 earns 1 point. To qualify for AFT promotion points, you must pass every event — a minimum of 60 points per event and the total score requirement.

AFT promotion points are converted from the record AFT score using Table 3-4 of AR 600-8-19, with a maximum of 120 points at a score of 500 and a minimum of 1 point at a score of 300-304. To receive AFT promotion points, the Soldier must meet the applicable AFT qualification requirements, including the minimum event scores and the total-score requirement. To confirm your current AFT points, check your AFT score.

Awards and Badges Points (Max 145 SGT / 165 SSG)

Awards and decorations are worth 10 to 35 points each under AR 600-8-19 Table 3-5. The Soldier's Medal and Bronze Star with 'V' device are worth 35; the Bronze Star and Purple Heart 30; the Meritorious Service Medal 25; the Army Commendation Medal 20; the Army Achievement Medal and Good Conduct Medal 10. Badges are worth 10 to 60 points under Table 3-6: the Expert Infantryman, Expert Field Medical, and Expert Soldier Badges are worth 60; the Combat Infantryman, Combat Medical, and Combat Action Badges 30.

Badges are not cumulative — a higher-level badge adds only the difference. For example, if a Soldier holds the Basic Recruiter Badge (10) and later earns the Master Recruiter Badge (20), they receive 20 points total, not 10 + 20 = 30. Certificates of achievement (DA Form 2442) add 5 points each, up to 20. Airborne Soldiers in authorized positions earn an additional 20 points, and jumpmasters 40. Your AFT points start from the score you earn on test day — see your AFT score.

Military Education Points (Max 240 SGT / 245 SSG)

For Soldiers on the promotion recommended list, BLC graduation adds 150 promotion points toward SGT; ALC graduation adds 150 toward SSG — eligibility conditions apply. Commandant's list graduates earn 20 more; Distinguished Honor Graduates earn 40 more. Resident military training earns 4 points per week (40 training hours), up to 110 for SGT and 115 for SSG. Ranger, Special Forces, and Sapper qualification courses are worth 40 points. Correspondence courses and Army e-Learning earn 1 point per 5 hours of completed training, up to 90 points.

Civilian Education Points (Max 135 SGT / 160 SSG)

Civilian education earns 2 promotion points per semester hour from an accredited institution, up to 135 for SGT and 160 for SSG. Completing a degree while on active duty adds 20 points. CLEP and DANTES test credits earn 2 points per credit hour. T2COM-approved technical certifications earn 10 points each, up to five certifications or 50 points. A Defense Language Proficiency Test (DLPT) score of 1/1 or better earns 25 points.

How to Check Your Promotion Points

Your promotion points are reflected in your Promotion Point Worksheet (PPW) in IPPS-A, the Army's HR system of record. Review your PPW before the monthly promotion cutoff and work with your unit HR/S1 to correct missing or incorrect data. Keep your records current: weapons qualifications in DTMS, transcripts at the education center, and course completions in ATRRS.

What Removes You from the Promotion List

Promotion eligibility depends on more than points. Flags, required training, body-composition compliance, fitness-test requirements, and other conditions under AR 600-8-19 can affect eligibility. Check AR 600-8-19 and your S1 for your specific situation.
